atrata: weekend update
The technobabble update is that I'm in the process of setting up a dev box. I've got the subversion repository set up, and now I need to configure it to allow multiple users. Then I need to install TRAC, and hook it in to the resository. Then we get coding. The dev team itself is not quite hammered out yet, but it's close. I still have e-mails to send and e-mails to read and e-mails e-mails e-mails, but once the hammering is done, I'll let you guys know who is rocking the behind-the-scenes development work.
One thing I really need to get better at is sorting or noting comments as they come in. I didn't make a running list of name suggestions as they appeared in my inbox, so it took me forever to go through the five pages of comments on that post and find them. Here they are:
- our thing (okay, that's stil me, but a few of you said you liked it!)
- crack rack
- fandom world
- the place (because it's time)
And, last but not least, I set up fandom_flutter
as a place to vent, share, post essays, etc. It's still moderated, in order to keep out spammers/advertisers/whatever, but I hope people who are interested in discussing the further implications of the exodus will head over there. I'm going to clear out the mod queue for this comm, and I hope anything that gets rejected will end up over there. I guess I'd like to try to keep this community for Project-related updates. I dunno. It's a fuzzy line. And I've maybe had some drinks, so it's clearly time to step away from the laptop.

I really, really love Fanspire. *_*
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 03:34 am (UTC)
Ohhh fanverse and fanspire make me happy. However crack rack makes me giggle and grin. :)
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 03:34 am (UTC)
A lot of these domains are already taken.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 03:36 am (UTC)
I quite like fandomain. But "crack rack" would be an awesome name for "friends list" :)
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 03:37 am (UTC)
Brilliant, and seconded! ;D
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 03:40 am (UTC)
I quite like Fanthing. It's sounds a little silly, which makes it fun, but Thing has deeper and rather appropriate meaning (archaic Norse term for a public assembly or counsel!). And it is related to 'our thing' which I seem to have become fond of, before I knew it.

I like sanctuary best, and fanhaven after that :)
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 03:42 am (UTC)
i like Our Thing and Sanctuary, and Fanspire is kinda neato too. And I'd like to fourth the crack rack as a play on friends list.

One thing I'd like to note is that, if you want to encourage LJ users who aren't in fandom to join the site then it's probably best to keep "fan" out of the title. Fans will find the site no matter what -- having a haven for them, especially in regard to the treatment they get on a lot of journaling sites, is probably enough of a draw -- but many non-fans will avoid a site with "fan" in the title because they'll assume it has nothing to offer them.
As for a name you can get as a domain... Many domains these days are taken, so I would recommend combining two words that describe what kind of service you're offering (ala. Live Journal, Word Press, Type Pad). Maybe figure out what features will make your service stand out and create a name from that.

I like your thinking, and I think the word "haven" would be quite good :)
Or home, something friendly sounding.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 03:57 am (UTC)
I really like Fanspire or Fanspiration. A cute logo could be a lightbulb!
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 03:58 am (UTC)
oooh! I have a name I'd like to suggest!
definition: the indistinct sound of people whispering; "a soft susurrus of conversation
I think that it's a really cool sounding name, and isn't linked specifically to the idea of journaling, or fandom, but in no way excludes them either.
Also, it's a really neat word.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 05:22 am (UTC)
I like that one too.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 04:21 am (UTC)
Bob can be the maskot, if there is one! :S
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 04:04 am (UTC)
fanspiration is my favorite. ^-^ Though I'd be quite happy with anything on that list, really.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 04:31 am (UTC)
I'd be leary of using anything that has 'fan' in the name (even though a lot of those names are great ^^;) as it will likely keep many non!fandom people from joining. I know a lot of my friends wouldn't feel welcome if fandom was so prominently a part of the name. Even the name of this community has confused/discouraged many people I know despite my pointing out that it's supposed to be for everyone.
Personally, I quite like Sanctum/Sanctuary or Haven as possible names.

I'm still very fond of our thing. Alas, someone in Grand Rapids is squatting on both .org and .net. Likewise theplace.net, which is my second choice. So those might be expensive to get.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 04:36 am (UTC)
Fanverse and fanspire are both nice-- sort of soft and fuzzy but not too fluffy.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 04:43 am (UTC)
um, am i the only one who really doesn't like any of them? :\
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 05:04 am (UTC)
I'm not hugely drawn towards any of them, but I don't have better ideas... I'll think on it and comment to this comment if I come up with something that strikes me as appropriate. I agree with the other commenters who have said they don't think it should have the word "fan" in it. To me, it feels exclusive against people who are not strictly "fans".
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 11:00 pm (UTC)
I really liked the idea "Scriptitate" (evidently it means "keep writing") as suggested by [Unknown LJ tag]
on page two of comments. I like it more for the meaning than the sound of it.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 05:14 am (UTC)
i like a few, so i'll be waiting for the poll :) i suppose you'll have to make it in stages. the only thing i could think of myself was silly, but what the heck - fantabulous
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 05:19 am (UTC)
'Sanctuary' might be fun, if only for the Logan's Run references. :3
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 05:20 am (UTC)
While I love several of the names with "fan" in them, I have to agree with the arguments against such a naming scheme. The one I suggested, postnet, doesn't really have the zing I think we're going for, though it does refer to what the site would actually do. I love the concept of including "thing" in the name. Maybe "writething?" Could be too cheesy.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 05:29 am (UTC)
Crack rack sounds like what you see when a plumber bends over and his pants show his arse.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 05:47 am (UTC)
My vote would go to fandomain or fanhaven, but I don't know if those names are already taken.
Sun, Aug. 12th, 2007 07:44 am (UTC)
Other ones I like are Sanctuary and Fanhaven.
